Ph.D. Program
Ph.D. Tourism and Hospitality Management
The University of Waikato through a Memorandum of Understanding with the College of Charleston offers its Ph.D. by research in Hospitality and Tourism Management in both New Zealand and Charleston, SC. This alliance is between UW’s Department of Tourism and Hospitality Management and the faculty of CofC’s Department of Hospitality and Tourism Management who are approved as UW graduate supervisors. The University of Waikato is the degree awarding institution.
The Ph. D. program is designed for candidates with high promise in the field of hospitality and tourism management who desire a career in academia, consulting, and research. The program provides students the rare opportunity to earn a Ph.D. in the field from an internationally accredited business school. The Waikato Management School has achieved Triple Crown Accreditation through AACSB, AAMBA, and Equis.
A candidate must meet minimum requirements established by The University of Waikato to qualify to enroll in the PhD program. Acceptance into the program requires evidence of a solid foundation in research methods and statistics; which is a necessary foundation of the dissertation process. The College of Charleston can provide such foundations if required. Once conditionally admitted, the candidate must complete an initial period in residence at The University of Waikato located in Hamilton, New Zealand. During this residency the candidate will focus on problem specification and research design to the satisfaction of the supervisors there. Following this the candidate can return to the USA for data collection where appropriate, or to other locations. Subsequent supervision will then be jointly undertaken by staff at both the University of Waikato and the College of Charleston.
