DEPARTMENT OF HOSPITALITY AND TOURISM MANAGEMENT Internships An important component of our Hospitality and Tourism Management program is the work experience students glean while outside the classroom. It is our aim to give them the tools they need not only academically but also professionally to become future leaders in the industry. Industry partners have multiple opportunities to offer work practicum (craft-level/front-line technical skills) and also senior level capstone internships (assistant manager or supervisory level) positions. Opportunities exist in: Tourism Marketing, Accounting/Controlling, Hotel/Resort Operations, Food & Beverage, Human Resources, Event Planning, Senior Assisted Living, Real Estate Development for the Hospitality Industry and others. The 400 hour work practicum experience will be completed by students during their sophomore/junior years at the College, thereby ensuring a cross-section of technical exposure prior to the internship their senior year. Organizations may choose to rotate students through various jobs and have them observe management team meetings. Research or consultation projects may also be assigned. The Fall, Spring or Summer senior capstone internship itself is a 120 hour (minimum) experience and can be either/both front and back-of-the-house in orientation. Experience has shown that students and employers benefit more from a lengthier commitment on both ends – one year is recommended – with either full-time or part-time options. Compensation is expected to be commensurate with qualifications and recognized potential. It is the discretion of the employer as to whether the applicant meets that organization’s needs. In addition, we host two career fairs per year and welcome participation of industry partners.
