The Catawba Cultural Preservation Project has received three grants totaling $346,000 to help fund a tourism initiative, further enhance their youth cultural immersion program and to create a youth alcohol and substance abuse prevention through cultural intervention program for the Catawba Indian Nation of South Carolina. Call for Papers:
The College of Charleston is hosting the 5th Bi-Annual Symposium of Consumer Psychology of Tourism, Hospitality and Tourism, on June 4-6, 2007. The symposium will bring together tourism, hospitality and leisure researchers from around the world to report research, share ideas, and advance consumer psychology and consumer behavior theory in this important economic and social discipline. The University of Waikato through a Memorandum of Understanding with the College of Charleston offers its Ph.D. by research in Hospitality and Tourism Management in both New Zealand and Charleston, SC. This alliance is between UW’s Department of Tourism and Hospitality Management and the faculty of CofC’s Department of Hospitality and Tourism Management who are approved as UW graduate supervisors. The University of Waikato is the degree awarding institution. Click here for more information.

The Department of Hospitality and Tourism Management is offering HTMT-210 Principles and Practices in Hospitality and Tourism Management, a 3 credit course, during Maymester and Summer I of 2006. Click here for more information.

The department purchased and installed the world’s leading hotel management information system OPERA. The system is produced and supported by MICROS-Fidelio International and is "the standard" in the industry with over 20,000 installations worldwide, including InterContinental Hotels Group, Hilton International, Marriott International, Four Seasons, Wyndham Hotels, Le Meridien Hotels, and Best Western. OPERA will be used in various classes beginning in the Spring 2006 semester. The system will give our students hands-on experience of hotel operations and management information systems and subsequently great competitive advantage when they are on the job market. Awarding-winning travel writer Sharon Spence Lieb interviewed Dr. Bob Frash., Jr., our new faculty member specializing in restaurant entrepreneurship, about his life experience as a restaurant owner, student, and college professor. Dr. Frash created and managed four award winning restaurants, earned numerous degrees, published hospitality industry case studies and assessments, and presented his research at prestigious Hospitality and Tourism Conferences throughout the United States. He is currently teaching two classes at College of Charleston and he didn't rule out the possibility of opening a new restaurant in Charleston with some energetic and talented students. The Department of Hospitality and Tourism Management opened the Office of Tourism Analysis in August 2005 under a partnership with the Greater Charleston Area Convention and Visitors Bureau and the Charleston Metro Chamber of Commerce. The OTA is charged with implementing a series of competitiveness research and monitoring programs and disseminating such information to decision-makers and stakeholders in the lowcountry’s hospitality and tourism industry.
